WORK TRIANGLE OPTIMIZATION

Kitchen design has come a long way since the 1940’s when the “work triangle” layout first entered showrooms as the ultimate design for kitchen organization and efficiency.

 

 

The standard kitchen triangle consists of three primary work areas : the cooking area including a prep space and stove, the cleaning area including a sink and garbage and the storage and refrigerator area. Traditionally, designers believed that positioning these points in a triangular layout, within 4 to 12 feet of one another created the optimal arrangement for ease of movement and functionality in the kitchen.

 

As kitchen design became more involved, designers and planning experts including busy moms realized that the kitchen work triangle didn’t always include enough counter space or provide the best storage options. The realization came that when more than one person worked in the kitchen it was difficult to perform simple tasks efficiently in the same work areas. In today’s busy households, there usually isn’t just one cook in the kitchen. Many working families prep and cook a whole weeks worth of food over the weekend. Our kitchens need to work efficiently for more than one person and multiple family members are likely to share the joy of cooking.
